Top Story #1: U.S. Department of Education launches initiative to protect K-12 students from sexual misconduct
On July 10, the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) launched a national initiative to combat adult sexual abuse in K-12 schools. The Trump Administration observed “a troubling and recurring pattern” of reported child sex crimes committed by school employees. The DOE reminded federally funded education institutions of their legal responsibilities to protect children from sexual misconduct, report incidents or allegations and enforce policies that prevent “passing the trash.” Read DOE Secretary Linda McMahon’s Dear College Letter.
Top Story #2: Florida expands communism instruction mandate for middle and high school students
On August 25, The National Desk reported that 6th-12th grade students will be learning about the Soviet Union, Castro’s Cuba and the suppression of speech, religion and individual freedoms under communist regimes. Curriculum materials are available through the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation. Florida was the first state to mandate a comprehensive K-12 history of communism after the 118th Congress (2023-2024) passed H.R.5349-Crucial Communism Teaching Act.
Hot Take #1: Man in heels tells audience, “Parents cannot be trusted.”
In July, a viral video featured an anti-parent activist speaking to a room of people, saying, “Parents are not your friends. They cannot be trusted.” The video has since been scrubbed from internet archives. Penn College didn’t name the speaker, but claimed he’s not an employee and no students attended the event.
Hot Take #2: Podcast host says reparations have already been paid
During Episode 27| USA: Democracy or Republic, our host declared government assistance programs were a form of reparations for black Americans. The statement was in response to claims that 21st-century white Americans are financially responsible for our nation’s dark history. The clip went semi-viral on Instagram, garnering responses across political spectrums.
